Destin Library gardens open to the public on April 27

The Destin Log

Mark your calendars for April 27th. Various members of the Destin Garden Club over the last 21 years have freely given their time and expertise to beautify the grounds of the Destin Library, 150 Sibert Avenue.

On Saturday, the numerous gardens surrounding the library will be open for viewing and exciting activities are planned for all ages.

The schedule follows: Starting at 9:15 a.m., members who began the garden 21 years ago will briefly discuss the original garden developments.

From 9:30 – 10:30, Dave Gordon, Okaloosa County Master Gardener, will lecture on Pollinator Gardens; from 10:00 – 10:30, Sadie Lea, the Children’s Director at the library, will have story time for the younger kids.

At 10:30, The Butterflies in Motion trailer will be coming with a display of live butterflies. At 11 a.m., there will be guided tours of the 10 gardens while the kids are enjoying crafts and milkweed planting.

The Japanese Garden at the Destin Library has been a project of the Destin Garden Club.

Planted outside in a pot or in the dirt, this will attract the Monarch butterfly, which will lay their eggs on the plants, caterpillars will hatch, and chrysalis will form and later turn into the Monarch butterfly.

A team of Destin Garden Club members will be working in each of the 10 garden beds that have been developed and will be available to answer questions within the gardens.

The club has received five grants from Plant America and the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs that helped create these gardens. We have received yearly support from the Friends Guild of the Destin Library. Lowes of Destin, John Davy, Panhandle Growers, Inc. Tree Farm, Wildwood Nursery, and Emerald Coast Nursery have all helped with unique plants for the theme gardens.

The amazing team of Destin Garden Club workers who make these gardens beautiful for the community hope you will come and celebrate the gorgeous landscape they have created for you here in the gardens of Destin Library.
