Personal records, and a gold medal: Destin Sharks fair well at track county championships

The Destin High Shark track team made a good showing at the Okaloosa County Championships held at Fort Walton Beach High School on April 19, bringing home some medals.

“I am very proud and happy for the kids on their performance at county,” Destin coach Jonathan Ramos said. 

High schools participating included Destin, Fort Walton Beach, Crestview and Liza Jackson Preparatory.

“Almost every kid set a personal record, and we broke three school records,” he said. 

“Their performance just speaks volumes of their hard work, competitiveness and coachability,” Ramos added. 

Members of the Destin High track team from left are Anthony Couvertier, Raejay Villanueva, Garrett Fulmer, George Mason, Will Bruckner, Evie Gherdovich, Avery Emmick and Aariah Gordon.

Evie Gherdovich captured first-place for the Sharks in the 400 hurdles and second in the 100 hurdles. She is the first Shark to win gold at the county championships.

Avery Emmick placed in the top five as well for the Sharks. She placed third in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 100-meter dash.

Aariah Gordon, who set a personal record by 2 feet, placed fifth in shot put. 

Raejay Villanueva PR'd in the 400-meter dash and the mile. He placed fourth overall in the 400-meter and ninth in the mile event. He ran 5:56 in the mile which was a PR of 19 seconds.

Garrett Fulmer broke the school record in the mile, running 5:03.20. Jackson Becker was not far behind, running a personal-record 5:06. Fulmer was eighth overall and Becker ninth.

Mason George set a personal record in the 100-meter dash by two-tenths of a second for an eighth-place finish. In the 200-meter dash, he set a personal record by five-tenths of a second and placed sixth overall. George also took eighth place in the long jump with a leap of 5.58. 

Anthony Couvertier had a personal record in the 400-meter event by 3 seconds and by 12 seconds in the 800-meter. 

Sherry CastroLux got a personal record in the discus and shotput. She placed seventh in discus.
